Art Galleries Along Cape Town’s False Bay Coast

The False Bay Coast is well known for the Instagram-famous beach huts on Muizenberg Beach, fish and chips at Kalk Bay, and the soft white sands of Noordhoek’s Long Beach. What many visitors don’t realise is that this coastline is also home to a range of art galleries showcasing some of Cape Town’s brightest talent. Bringing home a piece of local art is not only a lasting memory of your trip but also a reason to return and grow your collection.

Gavin Larkin Gallery – Muizenberg

After 33 years in advertising, Gavin Larkin swapped Johannesburg’s city life for Muizenberg’s seaside charm. His gallery is a colourful celebration of acrylics, oils, resin, wooden blocks, and found objects. Increasingly focused on turning waste into art, Gavin transforms bottle caps, cans, and even 2 800 discarded computer keys into striking portraits of icons like Madiba, Einstein, and Marilyn Monroe. His signature “Block Buster” technique creates multidimensional portraits of South African greats such as Siya Kolisi and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, some of which now hang in international collections.

Studio Gallery no.3 SPG – Muizenberg

Across from Muizenberg station, Dr Sue Pam-Grant’s studio is both a gallery and a creative incubator. An interdisciplinary artist, actor, director, and writer, she works across mediums to explore the space between process and performance. Her work often investigates time and memory, with rich reds and pinks dominating her practice. Visitors are immersed in a lively studio filled with ideas and inspiration. For those feeling creative, Sue also runs masterclasses titled The Return to Daydreaming: Art as Life/Life as Art; Theatre as Process.

Ink Box Art Gallery – Kalk Bay

Kalk Bay’s Main Road is lined with eclectic shops, and up Memory Lane you’ll find the Ink Box Art gallery. Owned and curated by artist Johan Alberts, the space brings together established names such as Johan Bosch and Peter van Straten alongside emerging talents. From mixed media sculptures using ocean plastics to cold-water swimmer-inspired pieces and delicate ceramics, the gallery offers a wide mix. Prints, tiles, and quirky artworks – including Sonja Kastner’s quotes, Mariette Momberg’s apocalyptic landscapes, and Ruan Jooste’s digital portraits – make for accessible and transportable souvenirs.

Noordhoek Art Point – Noordhoek

Before you reach Noordhoek’s sweeping Long Beach, stop in at Noordhoek Art Point. Founded by artists Aimee Kruger and Andrew Hart, this welcoming gallery showcases a collective of local talent. Highlights include Gavin Thomson’s customisable cartoons, Tuesday Houston’s ocean-inspired illustrations, and Aimee Kruger’s whimsical ceramic creatures. With a range of price points and functional art items featuring fynbos, there’s something for everyone.

A Coastal Art Trail Worth Exploring

The False Bay Coast offers more than its iconic beaches and fishing villages – it’s also a thriving hub of creativity. On your next visit south, take time to explore these galleries where art, community, and coastal living come together.
