Cape Town International Jazz Festival: Africa’s Grandest Gathering
For over two decades, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival (CTIJF) has brought rhythm, connection, and celebration to the heart of the city. Known as Africa’s Grandest Gathering, this world-class festival is more than a musical showcase – it is a cultural cornerstone and a major contributor to Cape Town’s creative economy.
Music That Moves the World
Since 2000, the CTIJF has hosted some of the most celebrated names in jazz, soul, funk, and fusion, alongside rising stars and local legends. From Gregory Porter and Chaka Khan to Mandisi Dyantyis and Amanda Black, the festival offers a sonic journey across generations and genres.
After a three-year pause, the 2024 return proved the festival’s enduring appeal. With 61% of attendees experiencing the event for the first time, a new wave of festinos embraced its energy, confirming its place as one of Africa’s premier music events.
The 2025 edition, taking place at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) on 25 and 26 April, promises over 30 performances, immersive stages, and fresh experiences – including a new Food Truck Valley and premium hospitality lounges. Coinciding with Freedom Day weekend, it is a celebration of culture, creativity, and community.
A Cultural and Economic Force
Beyond its vibrant line-up, the CTIJF delivers major economic value. In 2024 alone, the scaled-down festival generated over R119 million in production impact and supported between 444 and 1,200 jobs. From hospitality to security, the festival injects energy into multiple sectors and brings thousands of visitors to Cape Town.
Hotels, restaurants, and small businesses benefit from the annual influx of visitors, while the wider city buzzes with related activity – from wine tours and beach visits to concerts and cultural excursions.
More Than Music
The CTIJF is a multi-dimensional experience. In addition to the ticketed performances, the festival includes masterclasses, workshops, and networking events that empower young talent and professionals. Its annual Free Community Concert opens the experience to broader audiences, reinforcing its accessibility and inclusivity.
The event also invests in long-term impact. Organiser espAfrika supports community music education and outreach initiatives year-round, contributing to cultural development and social change.
Staying in Tune with the Times
Always evolving, the CTIJF continues to embrace new genres and global trends. In recent years, acts like FKJ, MonoNeon, and Yussef Dayes have brought modern fusion and experimental sounds to the line-up, broadening its appeal and welcoming new audiences.
The experience is entirely cashless and underpinned by strong sustainability goals, making it not just memorable but forward-looking.
Whether you are a jazz devotee or discovering the festival for the first time, the Cape Town International Jazz Festival promises two unforgettable days of music, movement, and meaning – in one of the most iconic cities in the world.
