Unlocking sustainable and inclusive tourism growth

As global travel continues to evolve, Cape Town and the Western Cape is positioning itself to capture new opportunities while ensuring the benefits of tourism are shared more widely across the province, giving businesses and investors new reasons to invest in Cape Town. In line with Wesgro’s strategy, the agency is accelerating sustainable tourism growth by expanding into high-potential international markets, strengthening strategic partnerships, enhancing air connectivity and increasing geographic spread across the destination.

Growth Markets

Wesgro is strengthening its presence in high-growth markets, including India, China, Brazil, ASEAN and the Middle East, with the aim of attracting higher-value visitors, encouraging longer stays and increasing tourism’s economic impact across all six regions of the province. This while we maintain a continued focus on established markets including the European Union (EU), United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (US), and the rest of Africa.

Through targeted destination marketing, industry partnerships and participation in leading international trade platforms, Wesgro is positioning Cape Town and the Western Cape as a year-round destination. Strategic memberships with associations such as the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) help build valuable trade relationships and unlock new opportunities for local tourism businesses.

Market-specific campaigns, trade missions, familiarisation (FAM) trips, multilingual content, and collaborative marketing initiatives showcase experiences tailored to different traveller segments, including nature, wine tourism, gastronomy, luxury, wellness, adventure, culture and authentic community and township-based tourism.

A key part of this approach is connecting international demand with local supply through platforms such as the Cape Trade Portal, which enables tourism businesses to showcase their products and engage with international trade partners.

By expanding into new markets while strengthening established ones, Wesgro is driving sustainable tourism growth, supporting local tourism businesses and reinforcing Cape Town and the Western Cape’s position as one destination offering multiple experiences.

Township Tourism

Tourism is one of the Western Cape’s most significant economic sectors, supporting jobs, entrepreneurship, and inclusive economic growth across multiple industries. As the province works towards unlocking tourism growth by 2035, Wesgro is focused on ensuring that these benefits are shared more broadly across communities.

Central to this effort is our focus on township and community tourism, which promotes authentic cultural heritage and community experiences. By encouraging visitors to explore beyond traditional tourism hotspots, the focus helps diversify the province’s tourism offering and increase visitor spending in historically underserved areas.

Aligned with the “Discover Cape Town and the Western Cape” destination brand and the “With Love from The Locals” campaign concept, the focus promotes sustainable, geographically inclusive tourism across the province.

Leisure events also play an important role in driving economic activity, creating jobs, and reducing seasonality. Through partnerships with community and township events, Wesgro is helping position Cape Town and the Western Cape as a world-class events destination while showcasing townships, small towns and dorpies as compelling tourism destinations.

This approach improves visibility, encourages longer stays, and increases local spending, while showcasing the unique identity, heritage, and creativity of each community. By placing local voices at the centre of tourism development, the programme ensures communities benefit directly from tourism growth.

For visitors, this creates more authentic and immersive experiences with meaningful opportunities to engage with local culture, people, and traditions. For communities, it generates sustainable economic opportunities while preserving and celebrating the cultural assets that make each region of the destination unique.

Unlocking Sustainable Tourism Growth: Why Invest in Cape Town

Together, these initiatives demonstrate Wesgro’s commitment to building a tourism sector that is both globally competitive and locally inclusive. By expanding into high-growth international markets and maintaining a focus on established markets, as well as investing in community-led tourism experiences, the agency is creating new opportunities for businesses, attracting higher-value visitors and ensuring tourism benefits are shared across the province.

By growing demand, increasing geographic spread, extending visitor stays and creating opportunities across all six regions, Wesgro is laying the foundations for a more resilient, inclusive and sustainable tourism economy that delivers long-term economic growth and job creation for Cape Town and the Western Cape.
