Visit Zeitz MOCAA: Contemporary African Art at the V&A Waterfront

Visit Cape Town and experience one of the continent’s leading cultural institutions at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA). Located in the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District, the museum is dedicated to contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora, offering a compelling blend of art, architecture and history.

Housed in the transformed structure of 42 historic grain silos, the building itself is a landmark. Designed by Heatherwick Studio, its sculptural form, striking façade and cathedral-like interior spaces have redefined the original industrial site into a world-class museum.

A Museum Experience Across Seven Floors

Spread over seven floors, Zeitz MOCAA offers a multi-layered experience. Visitors can move through expansive galleries, explore the dramatic Atrium, and engage with contemporary African art in a setting designed to inspire reflection and dialogue.

The museum also includes the BMW Centre for Art Education, as well as the Atelier, where emerging Cape Town artists work and engage with the public. The Museum Shop offers art-inspired items, while the rooftop terrace and Ocular Lounge provide panoramic views of Table Mountain and the surrounding city.

Current and Featured Exhibitions

Zeitz MOCAA presents a dynamic programme of exhibitions that highlight contemporary African voices and global perspectives.

Afflict the Comfortable, Comfort the Afflicted features immersive installations by Los Angeles-based artist Cauleen Smith, encouraging reflection and dialogue.

A Protea Is Not a Flower brings together Lerato Shadi and Robin Rhode in a conversation around identity, resilience and storytelling.

We Proceed in the Footsteps of the Sunlight sees Zohra Opoku explore personal and cultural histories through textile-based works.

Spring Is Rebellious: The Art & Life of Albie Sachs traces the intersection of art and activism through the life of Albie Sachs.

Permanent Collection and Architecture

The museum’s permanent exhibitions offer further depth. Sala explores themes of belonging and cultural memory, while Selections from the Collection presents over 500 works from leading contemporary African and diaspora artists.

Visitors can also explore Silo Through the Century: Into the Contemporary, an exhibition that documents the transformation of the historic grain silos into a contemporary art museum.

Africa Wednesday: Free entry on Wednesdays from 10:00 – 13:00 for South African and African citizens with valid ID or passport.

Free guided tours: Monday to Friday, 12:30 – 13:30 (book on arrival).

Admission: R265 for adults; free entry for children and teens.
