Transport

In Cape Town

In Cape Town there are a number of public transport options on our roads to get you around the city. Our bus systems are reliable and efficient and serve the needs of thousands of commuters and visitors.

We are also proud that Cape Town is the most universally accessible city in South Africa. There are a number of reasons for this – from the way we design our inner-city walkways to how we have built our public transport system.

Our universal access

Our Universal Access Policy and framework describe our overall approach to universal access. You can view these documents here or download these documents in the document download section at the bottom of the page.

The MyCiTi bus service is currently the only universally accessible form of public transport in the city – we are especially proud of it.

MyCiTi bus

Our MyCiTi buses are a great way to get around the city, while saving on fuel costs and relieving our already very busy roads of cars. MyCiTi buses are safe and efficient, with multiple stops and drops around the city connecting you to major transport routes and networks including the airport – suiting the needs of both commuters and visitors. The buses are also a great choice when considering the environment. Our larger and original buses comply with Euro 4 emission standards and our smaller, newer buses meet very strict Euro 5 emission standards. We also reduce emissions by mixing special additives into our diesel fuel. MyCiTi is really the greenest way to travel in South Africa. Go to MyCiTi for information on all available routes, bus timetables, fares and card sales/ top ups and fares.

Golden Arrow buses

Golden Arrow Bus Services (GABS) provides transport for thousands of daily commuters and has contracts with the provincial government. Golden Arrow started in 1861 as a horse-drawn tram service, making it over 150 years old. It currently has a user-friendly trip planning system on their website which allows passengers to plan trips to destinations from start to finish, or to view all timetables. For the most up-to-date information on all Golden Arrow Bus routes in the Western Cape, you can also call the City’s toll-free, 24/7 Transport Information Centre number: 0800 65 64 63.
