Cape Town International Airport is buzzing with a record-breaking 226 weekly international flights, while the cruise terminal is set to host 88 ship visits during the 2024/2025 cruise season. These milestones reflect Cape Town’s growing status as a global tourism hotspot.
‘Cape Town’s tourism industry continues to go from strength to strength, thanks to a focussed, multi-pronged strategy between the City government and our partners.
‘Our efforts prioritise air route expansion, airline partnerships, and cruise tourism to attract both domestic and international travellers. These impressive numbers confirm the success of our collaborative approach,’ said Alderman James Vos, Mayoral Committee Member for Economic Growth.
A city ready for visitors
To ensure a seamless experience for all visitors, Alderman Vos recently conducted site inspections at Visitor Experience Centres located at Cape Town International Airport, City Hall, and mobile units across the city.
‘Operated by Cape Town Tourism (CTT), these centres are hubs of activity and vital resources for visitors. Whether it’s booking tours, finding insider tips from our friendly staff, or discovering hidden gems, these centres make exploring Cape Town easier and more enjoyable,’ said Alderman Vos.
A warm welcome awaits
Enver Duminy, CEO of Cape Town Tourism, expressed excitement for the holiday season and highlighted the importance of the Cape Town Visitor Guide as a key resource for all travellers.
‘Cape Town Tourism’s members, from world-class dining spots to amazing tour operators, are going to deliver extraordinary experiences. These passionate professionals go the extra mile to showcase what makes Cape Town so special. Together with the City of Cape Town, we are thrilled to welcome visitors and help them create memories that will bring them back again and again,’ said Duminy.
From sunset views atop Table Mountain to vibrant cultural events and family-friendly beach days, Cape Town offers something for everyone this season.
Ensuring Visitor Safety and Comfort
The City has put extensive measures in place to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and visitors alike, including:
- Festive Tourism Safety Operation: Over 5 000 personnel deployed across the metro, including 680 lifeguards at beaches and pools.
- Youth Holiday Programme: Engaging activities at City venues for youngsters of all ages.
- Seasonal Cleaning Programme: Additional resources to keep the city’s streets, beaches, and public spaces pristine.
‘Our priority is to ensure every visitor feels safe, welcomed, and supported as they explore our incredible city,’ said Alderman Vos.
Tools for exploration
The Cape Town Visitor Guide, produced in partnership with Cape Town Tourism, is an essential tool for discovering the Mother City’s treasures. Packed with insider tips and detailed information on top attractions, the guide is available for free at Visitor Experience Centres or for download at www.capetown.travel.
‘This guide unlocks the treasure chest of experiences Cape Town has to offer, helping visitors connect with our vibrant culture, incredible natural beauty, and unique attractions,’ said Alderman Vos.
Driving economic growth
Tourism continues to play a vital role in Cape Town’s economy, and visitors play a key role in this success. By enjoying Cape Town’s attractions, dining at our restaurants, and exploring our vibrant neighbourhoods, every tourist contributes directly to job creation, economic growth, and the development of a better, more sustainable city.
In 2023 alone, tourism added a record-breaking R27,3 billion to the city’s Gross Value Add and supported 91 378 jobs, showcasing how the industry impacts communities.
‘Cape Town is not just a destination; it’s an experience. Every visitor contributes to the growth of our local economy, supports jobs, and helps us showcase the magic of our incredible city to the world,’ said Alderman Vos.
